What is Positive Parenting? Its Benefits and Advantages

By Andrew Loh

One of the most significant debating issues in the world of parenting is the manner which a parent can nurture and raise her children. In this effect, parenting methods assume lot of significance. Every parent has her own parenting style. Each one of them is special and unique. Conversely, there cannot be two similar parenting methods or techniques even though the foundation principles that back all parenting methods are almost similar. In other words, all parents want to give the best of life to their children. However, another question still lingers around in the minds of parents. In what manner parents can give the best of life to their children - You can ask this basic question to yourself. Some parents use a positive parenting style to nurture their children while others might use a method that borders on a sense of negativity.

Almost every other parenting expert recommends using a positive parenting style that ensures a positive parenting influence on the children. So, what is positive parenting style? Is there is special connotation attached to it? Are there any special techniques tagged to it? In a way, positive parenting is a style of parenting that depends on using positive principles and result-oriented techniques and methods. Now, let us understand the basic principles of positive parenting and in what manner you can use its principles to nurture your children.

Positive parenting is also known as a type of guidance to keep your children in the right momentum or place them on the correct path. With positive parenting, you can use a positive way to raise your children all the while resisting any urge or temptation to use a harsh or punitive disciplining method to correct children. In simple words, positive parenting is also known by the following words:

  • Positive discipline

  • Gentle guidance

  • Loving guidance

  • Affectionate guidance

With positive parenting, you can raise children who are responsible, dutiful, and considerate. Such children will also be happier, contended and resourceful. However, one can never attach any set of rules to positive parenting. Positive parenting is not about parenting style per se. Positive parenting is actually a method of leading a productive life with your children. In addition, life is free of fear, fright, scare and undue disciplining.

Why young children fail to follow parental rules and regulations?

Most parents make cardinal mistake of enforcing their own rules while nurturing their children. In fact, parents demand their children do what they want and desire. Unfortunately speaking, parents often tend to be authoritarian and strict disciplinarian on their children. A typical toddler or infant's brain is ready enough to follow parental rules and regulations because of the basic structure of the brain and its inferior brain connections. In other words, children brain will stay immature until they are about four to five years old. Their brain starts growing during this age and it demands basic principles of positive parenting to develop in a positive manner.

An early brain sustains children's life and almost all functions of the brain (rudimentary) work in tandem to ensure the biological survival of physical body. However, the age between six months and four years is very crucial for a child because almost all executive functions of the brain start developing this time interlude. By age three, most basic functions of the brain would have developed although they are quite inefficient and primitive. By age four, all brain functions become somewhat efficient and this time is very crucial for children because a positive parental technique will help them streamline these functions. Any parental method that parents use should help children enhance the overall efficiency of all brain functions.

Therefore, the most fundamental principle of positive parenting is as follows:

“Children can never understand and follow all your rules and regulations because they can simply do not understand what you say or do. A quickly growing brain is incapable of understanding rigid rules of parenting. What they need is positive parenting that takes into consideration the basic parameters of affection, love, care and nurturing”

Whatever the parenting method you use before a child reaches the age of four, he or she is more likely to remain defiant because of the brain structure. He or she needs plenty of positive care at this time interlude because all cognitive functions tend to develop with loving and positive care.

Positive parenting provides you several distinctive advantages like:

  • Optimum brain development.

  • Maximum development of cognitive functions.

  • Reciprocal care and loving nature towards parents.

  • Raising a responsible and concerned child.

  • Raising an affable and pleasing personality.

  • Better chances of becoming a highly productive and successful person both in academics and professional life.

Although one can never expect any noticeable pitfalls with positive parenting, one significant pitfall could be associated with this method - “If you use positive parenting method, you might become extra permissive while trying to learn and make out the way in which the system works for you.”.
