Optimal IQ Development in Children - Some Practical Techniques and Methods

By Andrew Loh

It is possible to enhance IQ in your children. Any type of IQ enhancement activities in children will involve training the brain. Experts in child psychology have been advocating brain training to enhance children's mind and brain. Several brain exercises are available that can step up brain's super power. Brain training is an entirely different method of tutoring children. Most of the brain training exercises focus on improving children's cognitive abilities. However, brain-training exercises are just not enough to enhance IQ in children. In fact, it is much more than that. Optimizing IQ in children is providing a supportive environment that focuses on enhancing the intrinsic motivational levels in children.

Here are some basic steps that your children need to develop their brain in an optimal manner:

Providing Close interaction

Parents should include an enhanced one-on-one interaction in their daily schedule to help children. This sort of relationship is very essential, because it can catalyze the development of synapses and connections quickly and in an optimum manner. Holding the baby closely with warm embraces, will transmit subliminal messages from mother to the baby. The outcomes that you can expect by providing a close interaction to the baby are numerous. For example, babies will develop a quick response system to the emotional status of the relationship. The main benefit of such a response is the development of emotional IQ in the later stages of life.

Providing sense of touch

Human touch is surreal and divine. Human touch is healing as well. Human touch extends the warmth that stretches beyond the physical touch. Mothers' physical touch on their tender babies' skin could be magical; touch can be emotional, as mothers and their babies bond instantly with a simple touch. Until now, experts believed that touch has the capability to create a deep bond between the mother and her baby. However, recent research suggests that human touch has a vital role to play in developing a series of skills and strengths.

Touch extends a sense of love and affection. A baby's simple and rudimentary early finger moments are possible with mother's touch. Human touch also provides a sense of comfort and security. As soon as you touch your baby, you are unknowingly helping him or her to send vital signals to the brain to instruct it to grow and enhance different nerve connections and pathways. Touch stimulates close interaction that eventually leads to better emotional development.

Better communication

The art of communication begins as soon as the baby is born. Communication is very vital for normal brain development. Communication could be in the form of simple signs or talking. It could also be a casual eye movement. Whatever the methods are, one thing is certain: that it will help your baby send important signals to the brain to decipher what was said to them and how it was said. The more the baby listens and hears, the more efficient will be the brain cell wiring system.

Enabling an internal dialogue

A baby or a young child needs a daily internal dialogue. If it is positive, it is easy to promote brain development in a positive way. On the contrary, negative dialogues will promote failures. In many cases, children could lead their brains to think about inferior intellectual outcomes that eventually result in failures. The connection between the brain and body is always very strong. Children need positive internal dialogues. These dialogues could enhance brain development and better intellectual performance.

Positive self-talk helps your children in an eventful manner. Self-talk has the ability to train the sub-conscious mind to imbibe positive messages. Here are some of the positive self-talk messages:

  • I can do it

  • I am capable

  • I am successful

  • I will do well

  • I can work hard

  • I have the skills to do it

  • I am positive

Brain training through mental gymnastics

Mental gymnastics mean using brain exercises to streamline the basic functions of brain to perform better in life. By playing games or performing activities that stimulate the mind, your children can train their brain to learn new skills and techniques. Games that need creative thinking and imagination will also help your children build better verbal, cognitive, concentration, perceptive and reasoning abilities. Here are some of the brain building games that you can play with your children:

  • Chess

  • Checkers

  • Board puzzles

  • Word games

  • Jumbles

  • Scrabbles

  • Monopoly

Music can add rhythm to your children's life

Attuning your children's mind to listening to music can help them enhance many issues of academic and personal life. Music will also introduce a sense of rhythm in their physical body and its functions. Children could refine their brain functions by regularly listening to the music. Music also enhances creativity and imagination. It has the ability to empower the brain to arrange the musical notes in a clean and organized sequence.

Regular exercise

Active body leads to the development of an active mind. Regular exercises and workout sessions help children in boosting their body and brain health. Physical activity will result in an increased metabolic rate and later in pumping up fresh oxygen-ridden blood to all parts of the body, especially the brain cells. Physical activity may help children in acquiring many basic skills like:

  • Crystallized thinking

  • Enhanced creativity

  • Increased learning skills

  • Inflated concentration power

  • Enhanced cognitive learning

  • Motor skills

  • Happy mind

Good nourishment for the body

Balanced food system is a precursor to better brain development. Food rich in protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals are known to enhance brain development in children. Green vegetables, fresh fruits, fish, cereals, fine grains, lean meat, egg and milk are some of the superior food ingredients that boost brain development. As far as possible, avoid sugar-rich drinks and foods, because they can drain the body of the vital nutrients those are essential for normal body and brain growth.

Brain development in children is an amalgamation of several simultaneous activities. Parents may need to devote some portions of their time to train children in fine-tuning their brains with different activities those are nourishing and supportive.
