By Andrew Loh

To many of us, the terminologies "brain-based learning" or “brain-based teaching” sound and appear common and familiar. Parents may simply ask isn't all learning, teaching and tutoring activities brain based? Yes! It appears as if all tutoring activities look and feel connected to brain based. But, there is a subtle difference to what you can call “brain compatible” type of education and “brain hostile” tutoring practices that are known to actually inhibit normal learning processes. Experts in child education actually recommend using highly innovative brain based education procedures.

Brain based education is a wholesome approach and a complete system of instructions based on how available sets of research in brain based learning impact natural learning by children and adults. The basic theory of brain based education stresses on what know about the actual structure and functioning of children's during their early developmental stages. This system of education provides you a natural way of teaching and learning and assists you in knowing more about more frequently occurring learning behaviors in your children. By using this system of education, you can a judicious mixture of techniques that help you make your children smart and intelligent. Brain based education techniques help parents to connect and relate learning processes to their children's real-life experiences.

The entire system of education encompasses following concepts like:

Mastering learning: Learning is a difficult process especially to children in their early life. Learning and mastering involves conditioning their brain functions and later relate them to life experiences. Brain based education techniques will help your children master learning processes and methods so that they can equip themselves for further learning.

Improve learning styles: The main difference between a smart child and an average child is the way in which the smart child learns and masters life experiences. Smart children can use a very sophisticated and quick learning style to learn and understand things.

Using multiple-intelligences: Gifted children have the ability to use a range of multiple intelligences to master their skills and learning methods. Brain based education methods can help your children use a range of methods to learn a number of necessary intelligences.

Problem based learning: Children learn better when they solve a range of real life problems. Problem based learning also provide an opportunity to link and relate real life experiences to a given situation or problem scenario.

Brain based education operates and relies on a number of basic yet critical principles such as:

Note: An adolescent brain displays a number of characteristic and parameters that you must learn and understand first before imparting brain based education.

  • Young brain acts like an efficient parallel processor! It can converse, talk and communicate with both sections of brain. An effective communication is necessary to learn and understand about things, experiences and lessons.

  • Young brain always seeks different patterns and forms to accumulate and collect new information and details. Proper pattern making is necessary to connect the brain to newly accumulated information and details.

  • Young brain is very inquisitive and curious. It needs novel information and details for proper development. It is also ready to accept meaningful and complex situations and investigations.

  • Young brain is quite unique and performs better when given different alternatives and choices. Larger the range of choices, more efficient will be the brain ability to sort out and streamline information.

  • Young brain is also emotional in nature and it can respond well to stressful and emotional environments.

  • Young brain needs protection and care from uncertain environments and it feels safe and sound when it feels and perceives physical and emotional safety.

  • Young brain is rudimentary in nature and it has the ability to sort out information either wholly or in part depending on the nature and perceived complexity of given information.

  • Young brain always needs a fillip or stimulation for better learning and understanding. An optimal stimulating ambience will help your child to learn and master lessons in a rapid manner.

  • As a parent, you may need to help your child to build on previously acquired knowledge and skills to make proper brain connections.

  • You may need to ensure that your child gets enough sleep (about 9 hour's non-stop) so that brain functions are tuned to their best.

Brain based education is a series of steps that ensure proper tuning of brain functions and developmental activities. Brain based education is all about boosting brain functions by adapting to the natural processes of learning and understanding.
