Hi,
It's that time of year again as Christmas is fast approaching. It is
a season that's devoted to GIVING. A time when we transcend our
petty thoughts of self-interest and reach out to others. So, I would
like to make a pledge....
Vinodh
is an 8 year old with a heart birth defect called Ventricular Septal Defect. Hundreds of kids like Vinodh
in India need complex heart operations early in life. The cost of surgery - around Rs.65,000
(US$1,450). Vinodh's parents earn Rs.200 (US$4.50) a month. A cure
for their little one seemed out of reach...
Your donation to "Children's
Heart Foundation" will make a real difference - you'll save a
child's life. How much you want to donate is entirely up to you.
Your donation don't have to exceptional. Even small ones will do,
for as Mother Teresa said, "It's not how much we give but how much
love we put into giving." I've been sending out BrainyZine free for
many years. I don't ask for any monetary gift from you. But, if you
feel that you want to buy me a beer for my effort all these years, I
ask that you give it to "Children's
Heart Foundation". Wishing you a great holiday season!
p/s: As everyone is busy during the end of the year and most readers
are probably too busy to read our newsletter. So we have decided to
give ourselves a break. There will be no newsletter till Jan 7,
2007. See ya next year and slow down to enjoy your holiday season...
Thought for today:
" Definition of status seeking: Buying things you
can't afford, that you don't need, to impress people you don't like.

Spinmaster Aqua Doodle Basic Mat
By Spinmaster
Recommended Age: 3 to 10 years
The Aquadoodle isn't a pool or tub toy, but without water
it's no fun at all. Just add water, doodle with the "magic"
pen and see color magically appear when water touches the
mat with no mess. The designs dry and disappear in less than
a minute. The 81 by 53-inch drawing mat is large enough for
several kids to doodle on at a time, using the included
magic marker pens over and over again.
No ink, no paint, and no mess!

Boost your baby's brain power
News 14 Charlotte Dec 9, 2006
Genes and environment both play an important role in determining your child's intelligence. But science is
proving there are other ways you can boost your child's brain power, and they start early.

Developing through play
The Star Dec 7, 2006
Children need to play as much as they need food, shelter and clean
air. Children do not need to cram their minds with information. When
they play, they learn to be resourceful and seek out the right kind
of information for use in their play.

A Nation of Overscheduled Kids? Maybe Not
ABC News Dec 4, 2006
The American Academy of Pediatrics, which published one of the
studies, warns that children today need more downtime, more time for free play...The
study finds that kids engaged in organized activities perform better
academically than their peers who do not. Busy kids are more likely
to get straight As, graduate from high school, go to college, and
less likely to use drugs. In short, contrary to popular belief,
participation in organized activities is associated with positive outcomes.

The power of music: Improving a child's brain power a note at a time
The Acorn Nov 30, 2006
Researchers have found the first evidence that young children who
take music lessons show different brain development and improved
memory over the course of a year compared to children who do not
receive musical training. After one year of music lessons, the
musically trained children performed better in a memory test that is
correlated with general intelligence skills such as literacy, verbal
memory, math and IQ.

Gifted Children and Homeschooling
Home Educator Dec 7, 2006
If parents have a gifted child, should they look at homeschooling as
an option? Not every parent should consider homeschooling for a
gifted child and not every gifted child should be homeschooled. That
said, homeschooling is an excellent alternative for many gifted
children at some point in their development.
